POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Nimitz Library invites applications for a Research and Instruction Librarian and Information Literacy Coordinator, who reports to the Head of Research and Instruction Services. The U.S. Naval Academy is one of five U.S. service academies and a top tier liberal arts college with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in faculty teaching and research.  The librarian in this position will have an essential role in designing and fostering an innovative information literacy program that supports and enhances the mission and learning outcomes of the USNA curriculum.  The main responsibilities of the librarian in this position include: collaborating with librarians and disciplinary faculty to plan integration of information literacy concepts in appropriate courses; planning and providing information literacy instruction sessions; assisting librarians with the creation, delivery and assessment of information literacy instruction and online resources; providing leadership and support for liaison librarians to identify opportunities and enhance student learning of information literacy and other library research skills; providing research assistance and serving as subject specialist for faculty and midshipmen for one or more of the disciplines, preferably English, taught at the Naval Academy.

This is a 12 month position with a 3 year renewable appointment slated to begin August 2017.  The position includes full federal benefits.


  • A Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science, anticipated no later than September 1, 2017, from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens


  • Minimum of two years of experience in information literacy instruction or background in instructional design.
  • Undergraduate degree or graduate degree in English or a related discipline.
  • Expertise in information literacy concepts, instructional design, assessment and curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and provide engaging course-integrated library instruction sessions.
  • Knowledge of learning theory, pedagogical methods and current trends in higher education.
  • Interest and experience in using new technologies in instruction and reference services.
  • Experience using online course management systems as well as online library instruction tools and applications.
  • Experience providing library reference or liaison services for an academic library.
  • Commitment to professional development and service.
