Position Summary:
The University Libraries at Virginia Tech seeks a service-oriented, innovative, technically savvy, and self-motivated Project Manager to lead the “Women of Design: Revealing Women’s Hidden Contributions to the Built Environment” digitization project. Over the course of two years, the “Women of Design” project will select, digitize, describe, and provide virtual access to approximately 800 cubic feet of material from Virginia Tech’s Special Collections that illuminate the contributions of women to architecture and design in the United States and across the world from 1929 to 2010. The Project Manager will be a full-time, faculty-level position for a two-year period, reporting to the Director of Special Collections (co-PI of the project).

This two-year grant project is supported by the “Digitizing Hidden Special Collections and Archives” program, a national competition administered by the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) for digitizing collections of rare and unique content in cultural heritage institutions. The program is generously supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and follows the model of CLIR’s “Cataloging Hidden Special Collections and Archives” program.

Major Responsibilities:
The Project Manager is responsible for coordinating the production of approximately 35,000 digital objects to support the “Women of Design” mass-digitization project. The successful candidate will direct the workflow for the project, manage daily activities, and supervise staff and students. The Project Manager will oversee the selection and digitization of original materials, assist with background historical research on items for potential digitization, resolve potential copyright or privacy concerns, review scanned items and metadata for quality control, and assist with uploading and preserving the digital content. With assistance from project leaders, the Project Manager will ensure that project goals are met, technical standards and professional practices are followed, the project is successfully promoted, and the financial expenditures are carefully monitored.

Required Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will have a minimum of a master’s degree in library and information sciences or a relevant field
  • Experience working on a digital project in a library or archives setting
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Strong technical skills and the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively are also required.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience with mass-digitization projects
  • Digitization of cultural heritage materials
  • Securing rights for digital content
  • Reading proficiency of foreign languages (e.g., German, Spanish, Bulgarian)
  • Experience working with design, building, or architectural records.
  • An understanding of architectural and women’s history is also preferred.
