The Town of Garrett Park in Montgomery County, Maryland, seeks a part-time archivist. Garrett Park was incorporated in 1898 and the entire town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The collection primarily consists of documents pertaining to the town’s history such as town council minutes, oral histories, information about the historical houses in town, community organizations, along with with several thousand print and digitized photographs.
The archivist would help to maintain the collection, expand the description of the records, and supervise volunteers. The position is for 2-3 days per week, or 14-17 hours; may include working on Saturdays.
- Cataloging materials using the software PastPerfect
- Developing tasks for volunteers and train them to complete tasks using the software PastPerfect; proofreading volunteer work
- Performing research for the town office pertaining to town and county laws and ordinances
- Responding to research and information requests from walk-ins, by email, and by phone
Desired applicants: A current student or recent graduate with archival experience, paid or unpaid. Must be comfortable working alone for extended periods of time. An interest in local history is preferred but not required. Ideally, the archivist would commit to working for at least one year.
