General Info: James Madison University Libraries & Educational Technologies is seeking a qualified Music and Media Metadata Specialist. As part of the Metadata Strategies Unit, this position ensures information discovery, metadata integrity, and optimal patron access to resources within the Libraries’ content systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform metadata creation in both MARC21 and non-MARC schema for the Libraries’ music, media, and electronic monograph collections in all formats (print and electronic scores, CDs, DVDs, streaming media, and e-books), including original and complex adaptive metadata creation.
  • Serve as liaison to the Music Library, Media Resources, and Scholarly Resources and Discovery to establish local practices, enhance discovery, and resolve issues relating to access.
  • Facilitate national discovery of JMU scholars and scholarship by creating authority records through participation in the NACO program.
  • Perform quality control of metadata and data analysis.
  • Train wage staff and students in physical processing and database maintenance tasks.

Qualifications:

  • Experience performing original and adaptive metadata creation using current standards and practices, including RDA, AACR2, LC-PCC PS, MLA and OLAC best practices, Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and other relevant vocabularies (e.g., LCMPT, LCGFT).
  • Experience using the OCLC Connexion client and an integrated library system.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform detailed work accurately.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new technologies and software.
  • Effective written and oral communication, organization, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or graduate degree in music.
  • MLS from ALA-accredited college or university.
  • Experience with authority record creation.
  • Experience with XML and non-MARC metadata standards and schema.
  • Experience with MarcEdit.
  • Reading knowledge of a Western European language other than English.
