About the Agency

The incumbent may be assigned to any Collections and Services division/office for short-term or long-term assignments at the Library’s Capitol Hill campus or the Library’s off-site storage facility at Ft. Meade, Maryland. The incumbent provides assistance to Digital Conversion Team staff and others on projects to present digitally reformatted Library and partner collections via the Library’s web site. These collections span multimedia forms of expression including text, graphic, photographic, moving image, cartographic, sound/audio, and mixed media. The technician works primarily with Digital Conversion Team staff but has contacts as needed with custodial division staff and production staff in other parts of the Library, as well as occasional contacts with production or other stakeholders outside the Library.

This position is located in the Digital Conversion Team, Digitization Services Section, Digital Collection Management and Services Division, Technology Policy Directorate, Library Services.

The salary range indicated reflects the locality pay adjustments for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area.

The incumbent of this position will work a flexitime or compflex work schedule.

This is a non-supervisory, bargaining unit position.

Relocation expenses will not be authorized for the person(s) selected.


Performs arrangement and description work in a major body of records describing digitized materials. Evaluates the correctness of item entries in different fields and makes corrections as needed. Identifies duplicate entries. Copies records when needed. Creates new records or adds to or edits existing records as appropriate. Consults with senior staff frequently prior to correcting or significantly altering questionable database entries.

Applies knowledge of the full range of library rules, procedures, and operations to respond to a wide variety of non-standard library collection maintenance issues. May transport collection materials for digitization. Will digitize some materials according to specifications provided. Performs quality review of digital results produced against benchmarks provided and transfers digital files to server locations.

Completes a sequence of detailed routines in searching online databases. Uses search tools in a variety of online databases that have different search interfaces and protocols.

Ability to use computerized search tools, databases and web-based tools.

Ability to attend to details in securing records.**

Ability to plan and organize work assignments in order to meet deadlines.

Knowledge of digital conversion principles, procedures and operations.**

Ability to communicate effectively other than in writing.
