George L. Ohrstrom, Jr. Librarian

The National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) in Middleburg, Virginia seeks a librarian to serve as the George L. Ohrstrom, Jr. Librarian. This position will report to the NSLM Executive Director and will work closely with the Mars Technical Services Librarian. The incumbent will be responsible for researcher assistance and visitor engagement in the Library, as well as relationship building and donor cultivation. The person in this position is responsible for delivering Library tours, collaborating cross-departmentally to enhance programs with Library content, and providing content for the NSLM blog. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the care and maintenance of all Library collections, supervising the Mars Collection Services Librarian
  • Builds Library audience through participation in programs, tours, and outreach initiatives
  • Budgets for all Library Department operational costs and manages projects through the Library Restricted Fund
  • Assists researchers and visitors as needed, including reference and research requests
  • Cultivates and stewards donors and prospective donors
  • Serves as the staff liaison to the Library Committee of the NSLM Board of Directors
  • Provides quarterly reports on Library projects and activities to the Executive Director
  • Generates regular posts for NSLM’s blog and other social media accounts as needed
  • In collaboration with the Mars Technical Services Librarian, processes and documents all donations of new materials to the collection and makes accession determinations
  • Collaborates with staff to develop and support creative programs and events involving NSLM’s collections
  • Develops and manages partnerships with other libraries and research organizations
  • As needed, makes presentations on the content of the Library’s collections to NSLM’s upper-level donors and donor prospects

Work schedule: 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Additional hours will depend upon events scheduled. Rotating weekend work schedule (on average, 6 weekends per year).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited master’s program
  • 1-2 years work experience in a library setting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail oriented with ability to work both independently and as part of a team with multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years work experience in a library reference setting
  • Experience in donor relationship building and cultivation
  • Public speaking experience
  • Project management experience

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to perform the duties of the position, including the ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time and lift up to 30 pounds

Compensation: $42,000 to $45,000 annual salary 50% employer paid health insurance IRA retirement plan with 3% match 13 paid holidays annually 10 days vacation, 7 days sick leave accrued annually
