January 2015 Alumni News

Guy Allen Overland, commonly known as Allen Overland (MSLS 1993), passed away on January 23, 2015, as a result of complications stemming from Systemic Capillary Leak Syndrome (SCLS). He had served as the Library Director, Research Library & Archives at the Export-Import Bank of the United States since October 2013, and previously served as the Director of the Democracy Resource Center at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). There will be a Celebration of Life to honor his memory on Sunday, February 22, 2015, in the sanctuary of Foundry United Methodist Church, 1500 16th St. NW, Washington, DC 20036, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall.  See also the post by SLIS alumna Zeinab Mansour (MSLS 1993) on the DC/SLA web site, “My Memories of My Friend Allen Overland”:http://dc.sla.org/2015/02/01/my-memories-of-my-friend-allen-overland/

In lieu of flowers, Allen’s loved ones request that donations be made in his memory to either the National Organization for Rare Disorders, an organization that funds research and treatment for patients with rare diseases like SCLS (http://rarediseases.org/about/support); or Doorways for Women and Families, an organization that provides safe housing and support services to women and families fleeing domestic violence and homelessness (https://www.classy.org/checkout/donation?eid=34035).
