Coordinator for Learning Technology

Reports To: The Dean

General Purpose: St. John’s College’s program of instruction emphasizes fundamental studies in contrast to the prevalent elective system. The central activity is the reading and discussion of books of lasting worth in small classes. We study the elements of language, mathematics, science, and music; we pursue the arts of translating (ancient Greek and French), demonstrating, observing, and singing.

Duties include:

  • Consult with faculty and students to evaluate the current state of digital academic resources at St. John’s. Assist faculty members by discovering and developing ways of exploiting digital resources for instruction that are appropriate to the St. John’s program.
  • Find ways to use technology to augment our study of foreign languages and translation, the analysis of music, the close study of texts, and facilitating writing instruction. Also use technology to support the laboratory and the study of mathematics.
  • Determine how online tools (e.g., Microsoft 365) can be used by faculty members to support instruction, especially collaboration outside the classroom.
  • Develop and implement specific digital tools suited to the curriculum.
  • Collaborate with the library staff on enhancing electronic digital resources.
  • Engage digital humanities programs at peer institutions in the Mid-Atlantic region in order to identify innovative instructional and research initiatives of interest to St. John’s.
  • Consult with faculty members who are developing instructional materials that investigate the theoretical foundations of computing, studied as part of a liberal education.
  • Assist the IT director in managing technology planning for the college.
  • Supervise student interns who are assisting the project.


  • BA degree and 3-5 years of experience in higher education supporting learning technology.
  • Advanced degree in digital humanities, library science, or instructional design, preferred.
  • Proficiency with internet applications, programming languages, databases, technical and scientific languages (e.g., LaTeX, Mathematica), or music software (e.g., Sibelius or Finale), preferred.
  • St. John’s degree, undergraduate or graduate, preferred; or eagerness to learn about St. John’s program of instruction.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, IT staff, library staff, and administrators.
  • Ability to convey complex technical information, orally and in writing, to non-technical users.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects.

This position is supported by a grant from the Mellon Foundation. This is a one-year term position, eligible to be renewed. It reports to the dean (chief academic officer).

Compensation: Grades 13-14, dependent on experience, base salary $58.223-$65.038; excellent benefits.
