Summer Internship, Smithsonian Archives of American Art (paid)

The Archives of American Art seeks candidates to assist with an African American collecting initiative funded by the Henry Luce Foundation. A $6,500 stipend, based on a full-time, ten-week schedule, is available for this internship. We encourage minority candidates to apply.

Interns will assist the Luce Initiative Archivist with processing new archival acquisitions that broaden and deepen the Archives’ resources for the study of African American art.

Archival collections are the personal papers—letters, unpublished writings, photographs, financial records, electronic records, and the like—of artists and others, as well as the records of arts organizations.

Among other tasks interns may:

  • Prepare preliminary inventories of newly acquired archival collections
  • Assist with the preliminary sorting and organization of collections and perform some processing tasks
  • Assist in reviewing and revising cataloging and subject terms for African American collections

There is also the opportunity to write a blog post for the Archives’ blog about your intern experience and to participate in the Archives’ Social Media Working Group.

We are seeking candidates who have

  • Coursework in art history, American history, African American Studies, and related fields
  • A demonstrated interest in African American art
  • A demonstrated interest in archives or archival research
  • Ability to work independently

and who are

  • Well organized
  • Detail-oriented

Outcomes: You will come away with a greater understanding of the day-to-day operations of an archive and research institution, including strategic planning, archival processing, and our policies, procedures, and workflow.

Interns work under the supervision and guidance of Rayna Andrews, Archivist for the Henry Luce Foundation African American Collecting Initiative. All internship application materials must be submitted through Smithsonian’s online internship application system at solaa.si.edu.
