Research and Instruction Internship – Loyola Notre Dame Library – Baltimore, MD

Internship Description

The Research and Instruction unit at Loyola ▪ Notre Dame Library (Baltimore, MD) will offer a current MLS student a practicum opportunity to gain experience in subject guides, usability testing, and user experience design as well as an understanding of the work at an academic library. The Intern will complete 120 hours. A portion of those 120 hours can be completed remotely, but the majority of work will be on-site. The Intern will report to the Research Services and Innovation Librarian.


  • Usability Testing (60 hours)
    • Analyze subject guide usage statistics and Google analytics data to discover trends
      related to guide and asset usage
    • Collaborate with librarians to develop and execute usability testing of current subject guides with faculty and students
  • User Experience Design (40 hours)
    • Based on usability testing, develop recommendations for revisions to subject guides, including content, organization, and aesthetics
  • Libguide Design (20 hours)
    • Customize LibGuides and LibCal interfaces to compliment the library website’s look and feel


  • Current MLS student
  • Interest in learning about instruction, research, and library procedures at an academic library
  • Familiarity with Springshare LibGuides and Microsoft Office products
  • Previous or concurrent course work in information literacy or user experience design preferred but not required
  • Skills in HTML, Javascript, or CSS preferred but not required.

The Loyola ▪ Notre Dame Library, located in a residential area of northern Baltimore City, serves two universities: Loyola University Maryland and Notre Dame of Maryland University.
