Product Manager, Data Products – SAGE Publishing – Washington, DC

Job Description:

The Product Manager will help lead the creation and ongoing management of the Data suite of products, for sale into the library market. They will lead projects and products as assigned including market research, product testing, and the definition and delivery of product enhancements, and new product development. They will demonstrate a deep curiosity in all aspects of their products and the market, working diligently to build a strong knowledge of the target users and buyers.

This position is part of the global Product Innovation Department at SAGE, working in a dynamic part of the business to significantly increase SAGE’s digital product portfolio with a specific focus on our library customers. Products for the library market at SAGE are developed with external technology partners.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for the design and delivery of major enhancement projects and new products for SAGE, carrying out research with our users and buyers, performing user acceptance testing, testing development ideas, defining requirements, creating and updating documentation, coordinating meetings and providing project updates.
  • Lead development projects for product enhancements and new product development. Define business requirements; work with Publishing Technologies department on schedules and communications with the external vendor. Work with the UI/UX Designer and other SAGE resources on the creation of wireframes and designs, and carrying out robust user testing.
  • Be the voice of the products and projects on which you work, within the wider business. Ensure regular meaningful product updates, presentations and reports to relevant project teams and stakeholders, including product reports, roadmap updates, product P&Ls, and competitive information. You need to be comfortable calling into sales meetings and be able to impact on meetings with customers.
  • Interact regularly with customers and the wider market to ensure you are immersed in their wants, needs, and perspectives in order to be an effective voice within SAGE advocating their viewpoint. This includes gathering new product and enhancement ideas, attending focus groups and conferences, testing new product ideas, joining sales calls, conducting usability tests and competitive research.
  • Lead the creation and maintenance of product backlogs. You will work with the Senior Product Manager and Associate Product Manager to prioritize feature development and product changes in line with the core product vision, annual priorities, longer term strategy, and expected commercial impact. This includes taking part in and running product ideation sessions, including design sprints.
  • Work with the Senior Product Manager and Associate Product Manager to help define annual product priorities and longer term strategic goals, feeding into discussions and supporting decision making by the steering committees for the products.
  • Work with other key stakeholders to develop and present business proposals for new products following the strategic roadmap set out by the Senior Product Manager and the steering committees for the portfolio.
  • Build and maintain a deep understanding of who is using your products and for what purpose, by analyzing usage data, conducting market research, working closely with the Senior Product Manager and the Discovery and Engagement Group. Work with the Product Assistant on the creation of informative, accurate product reports for assigned products. This will include analysis of Google Analytics and other customer data.
  • Respond promptly, professionally and helpfully to product questions and issues from throughout the business. Identify when an issue requires additional input from other departments or escalation and act accordingly.
  • As a part of the Product Innovation Team, participate and run group brainstorms and discussions around product management, the industry, and SAGE. Give input and propose adjustments to the ongoing development of processes and systems to improve efficiencies and effectiveness of product development at SAGE.
  • Ensure routine content tasks are completed consistently and on schedule working with Editorial, Production and other key teams.

Qualifications & Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  •  2 – 3 years digital product development experience
  • Ability to lead in an environment of constant change at a fast-moving organization
  • Establish and carry out a course of action to meet high level goals whilst remaining flexible to change as required
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment, building strong relationships and motivating and inspiring a team
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills – influencing by persuasion
  • Background in publishing, or experience of online content delivery preferred
  • Commercial business sense
  • Pro-active problem solving through insight and judgement
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to work globally, building relationships with individuals in other offices
  • Excellent time management and efficient execution of tasks
  • Ability to lead in an environment of constant change at a fast-moving organization
  • Ability to speak, write, listen, and work at a computer. No repetitive tasks required. You will be expected to travel to SAGE’s offices and to attend industry conferences and training as required.
