Processing Archivist – The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC

POSITION OBJECTIVE:
The Processing Archivist will work with the Head Librarian and current Archivist to process museum founders Duncan and Marjorie Phillips’s correspondence and photographs in preparation for digitization.

This is a temporary, part-time position requiring at least twenty hours per week, to last through September 2020.

DUTIES:
• Process (arrange, describe and preserve) correspondence of Duncan and Marjorie Phillips, the museum’s directors, and photographic holdings under the supervision of the head librarian, using standardized archival methodologies
• Integrate professional standards and processes, such as DACS, AACR2 and RDA into workflows and processes
• Assists with digitization initiatives for archival materials including textual and photographic items
• Create descriptive metadata for document delivery to a vendor for digitization, working closely with the Digital Asset Librarian
• Assists in preparing finding aids using relevant standards and established local practice, including EAD
• Creates collection-level records in MARC format for the library’s online catalogue.
• Prepare collections for digitization
• Keeps abreast of best practices and standards
• Assesses preservation and conservation issues and works with paper conservator to address treatment needs

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelors in archival studies or library science with an emphasis on archives and/or demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and practice
• Minimum of one year of professional archival experience
• Knowledge of current data content and structure standards related to the archival control of collection materials
• Experience with basic preservation standards for archival and manuscript collections
• Strong command of archival theory and best practices
• Working knowledge of MARC, EAD, DACS, RDA, Dublin Core and related standards
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
• Experience in working in museum setting desired
• Demonstrated oral, written, and interpersonal skills
• Knowledge of art history desirable
• Experience with metadata creation and digitization projects preferred
• Demonstrated experience collaborating on projects in a team environment
• Ability to lift boxes weighing 25 pounds
