Print Collections Supervisor – Georgetown University, Washington, DC

Requirements

The Print Collections Supervisor supports the teaching, learning, and research of Georgetown University faculty, students, and staff and the Library’s mission as an agile organization providing preeminent service, collections, and spaces to users. S/he supervises all aspects of physical maintenance of 1.6 million items in circulating and periodicals collections at Lauinger, Woodstock, and Blommer libraries, as well as Georgetown University materials housed in the Shared Collection Facility to ensure library materials are readily accessible and available. The incumbent oversees the transfer and delivery of materials among the various branches of the Georgetown University Library; monitors the growth of the physical collections; produces data reports and recommendations for improved library services and space; and provides support to other Access Services departmental operations as needed. Reporting directly to the Access Services Department Head, the Print Collections Supervisor has additional duties that include but are not limited to:

Unit Supervision and Coordination ​

  • Hires, schedules, trains, assigns tasks, and monitors the work of 40-50 student employees to maintain the physical collections, including the daily work of retrieving materials, shelving, and tidying of library materials and long-term maintenance efforts such as shifting and pulling materials identified for transfer to Off-Campus Shelving.
  • Coordinates the retrieval of all patron-requested materials from Lauinger, Woodstock, Blommer, Riggs, and CERES libraries and the WRLC Shared Collections Facility.
  • Ensures timely and accurate documentation of unit policies and procedures, explaining unit policies and services to patrons and staff both in person and online.
  • Oversees and backups the daily courier delivery and retrieves materials on-campus (Dahlgren, Blommer, CERES, Bioethics), as well as direct access borrowing to the Law and Georgetown Downtown campuses.
  • Compiles and maintains statistical data on daily tasks and workflows for annual reports and other special projects.
  • Implements services and explores feasibility of future services.

Collections Housing and Stacks Maintenance

  • Coordinates and supervises all aspects of stacks maintenance activities in the Lauinger, Blommer, Woodstock and Riggs libraries.
  • Monitors and provides reports on the growth of the physical collection, monitoring and projecting shelving capacity fill rates.
  • Identifies low-circulating items eligible for weeding and coordinate with subject specialists the pulling of those items selected for withdrawal.
  • Plans and executes shifting projects as needed to maintain appropriate growth space in the stacks.
  • Plans and deploys new shelving layouts as collection and space needs change.
  • Maintains accuracy of library floor maps, stacks signage, and other way-finding aids, both in the building and on the Library website.
  • Compiles and maintains statistical data regarding long-term collections trends for annual reports and other special projects.

Management of WRLC Shared Collections

  • Identifies low-circulating items eligible for transfer to the WRLC Shared Collections Facility (SCF), and coordinates with subject specialists the pulling of those items selected for transfer.
  • Manages and coordinates operations and implementation of shared collections projects.
  • Makes recommendations related to collaborative shared collections activities.
  • Liaises with WRLC Center staff to ensure the successful transfer of items off-campus.
  • Interprets Library and WRLC policies regarding disposition of physical materials to internal and external stakeholders.

Circulation Desk Services Support

  • Trains, assigns tasks, and monitors the work of student employees at the Circulation
  • Desk in order to maintain consistently excellent customer service.
  • Registers new patrons and updates patron records, as well as interprets and applies library policies.
  • Resolves disputes regarding fines, missing materials, and patron privileges, appropriately referring unresolved disputes.
  • Provides basic research assistance and answers informational questions about library resources and library services from users at the desk, online and over the phone.
  • Collects library fee payments using credit card terminal and GoCard register.

Professional Development and Contributions

  • Serves on Library committees and task forces, participating in meetings and departmental planning.
  • Provides constructive input to the Department Head for enhancements to services or revisions to policies and procedures.
  • Continually acquires new knowledge and updates skills to enhance professional performance in all areas of responsibility.
  • Undertakes special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 2 years’ library experience, preferably in an academic setting
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the role of academic libraries meeting the information needs of students, faculty, and staff
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong public service orientation
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with the public, and demonstrated experience supervising employees, particularly students and staff
  • Demonstrated sound judgment when interpreting policies and explaining procedures
  • Ability to work both independently with little supervision as well as in a team environment
  • Ability to set priorities and make decisions on a variety of complex matters
  • Ability to work under time constraints to meet deadlines
  • Experience with Microsoft office, integrated library systems, and google sheets at an intermediate to advanced level

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud products, especially Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop
