Principal Administrative Intern – Montgomery County Public Libraries – Rockville, MD

OB DESCRIPTION: The Public Administrative Intern will typically be assigned to the General Information Desk of a Branch Library to assist patrons in locating information resources. The position requires basic knowledge of library resources, and reference services in electronic and print media. The majority of contacts are with customers (in person or by telephone) on a short-term, on-going basis. Service typically involves questioning customers to determine the nature of assistance that is required, and deciding how to successfully deliver that assistance. Public service may also include providing instructions in the use of library reference and electronic tools and maintenance of materials and collections for currency, accuracy, attractiveness, and ease of use. The Public Administrative Intern (PAI) will work under the supervision of a professional Public Library employee. Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.


This recruitment will be used to recruit and hire multiple, part-time, temporary Public Administrative Intern (PAI), Grade 16 positions in the Department of Public Libraries, working up to 9 hours/week for one year. The position does not include benefits. The salary will be paid at the entry level, $18.59/hr. (Effective 9/8/14 the hourly rate will be $19.20/hr.) Individuals with six (6) earned MLS credits and currently enrolled in a Master Library Science (MLS) program are encouraged to apply; please note this on your submission.


Library hours of operation are Sunday through Saturday, including nights. The PAI positions will be scheduled to work at an assigned branch at least two Sundays per month from 12:30pm – 5:30pm from September 2014 through August 2015. Preference is given to those applicants that can work every Sunday. An additional three (3) hours of work will be scheduled during another day of the week at the Sunday branch, for a total of 8 hours/week.



Experience: None.

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university   with a Bachelor’s Degree.

Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.


PREFERRED CRITERIA: Resume must include information specific to the preferred criteria listed below.   1. Currently enrolled at an American Library Association accredited school in a Master’s Degree program for Library Science or Information   Science.
  2. A minimum of six (6) hours of Library Science degree   coursework completed; transcript will be requested at time of   interview.
