Part-time School Library Assistant, WIS Primary, NW DC

This position is located in the WIS Primary School Library at 1690 36th Street, NW, Washington, D.C. It is supervised by the Primary School teacher-librarian and reports to the Primary School Principal. The position is approximately 18 hours per week, preferably allocated to two and a half days per week. The pay rate is $18/hour. Duties include some or all of the following:

Circulation

  • Implement all aspects of library circulation and reserve services using Follett’s Destiny system and the library’s procedures
  • Correctly re-shelve materials and shelf-read when needed
  • Create detailed patron reports in Destiny
  • Prepare student id’s and manage student library bags

Collection

  • Create and edit catalog records in Destiny
  • Create reports in Destiny to facilitate collection management
  • Oversee the processing of all library materials
  • Create new-materials presentations
  • Recommend materials for withdrawal and perform withdrawals in Destiny
  • Perform inventory, if applicable
  • Mend damaged books

Library space

  • Prepare library space and computers for use (if schedule permits)
  • Maintain a neat appearance of the library and collection, including tidying shelves and student spaces throughout the day
  • Create displays, signage, decorations as needed.

Reference

  • Help students, teachers and parents in finding and accessing print and non-print resources, often using the online catalog
  • Become familiar with the collection and perform readers advisory when needed
  • Help students and teachers access information found in WIS’s subscription digital resources

Teaching and Programming

  • Supervise students using the library during their recesses and throughout the day
  • Assist with classes, including implementing classroom management methods
  • Help prepare for library classes using the collection and supplies
  • When needed, step in to read to and supervise classes
  • Assist with programming, such as author visits, assemblies and school-wide initiatives

Volunteers

  • Help train and supervise volunteers to satisfactorily perform library tasks: processing,shelving, shelf reading and other tasks.

Clerical and other

  • Document, receive and monitor ordered materials
  • Trouble shoot computers and printer issues; refill paper supplies as needed
  • Monitor levels of teaching and processing supplies and communicate for purchasing
  • Assist with teaching and library space scheduling using Google calendars
  • Perform other related duties, as needed

  • Detail-oriented, accurate, organized and thorough
  • Effective communicator and problem-solver, able to work independently
  • Collaborative and team-oriented
  • Experienced working in an IB Primary Years Programme school
  • Experienced working on Apple devices, creating/organizing/sharing files in Google Drive and creating documents using current digital tools
  • Experienced working with primary school-aged children
  • Experienced working in libraries and/or working towards an MLS
  • French-speaker and/or Spanish-speaker
