Currently our library primarily serves the staff at National Geographic Society and National Geographic Partners, so we are looking for a candidate who is strong in research, reference, and collection management. Librarian provides reference services, collection development and internal and external website content for the National Geographic Library. Supports digital initiatives and emerging technology solutions as well as current systems, including library website and ILS. This position seeks alliances with other functions within the Society and Content (Archives, Film, Images) to optimize complementary knowledge and skills. Helps envision and implement the library of the future. Provides training, marketing and outreach of products and services. Assists Library Acting Director as required.


  1. Digital Initiatives and Electronic Resource Management:  Oversees Library website (LibGuides) and works with related resources, including Google Sites, Polaris OPAC and others. Provides analytics and metrics to show library resource use. Develops expertise with emerging technologies and maintains awareness and engagement with trends and developments in e-resource management and sharing with library consortia, including investigating new Library products and assessing their relevancy for the library users and the public. (25%)
  2. Collection Management: As assigned by the Acting Director, identifies and selects the best print and digital information resources, examining features of resources available from multiple vendors, and providing access to those through Polaris, Libguides, or other tools. Works on patron maintenance, circulation tasks, weeding or shifting as needed. (25%)
  3. Reference and Instruction: Provides expert reference services and consultations for Society staff. Serves on the reference desk at least ten hours per week / as needed.  Creates research guides to guide users and highlight resources. Assists with new hire orientation, individualized instruction, in-person and online training and tutorials. (25%)
  4. Marketing and Outreach: Markets existing library resources and collections and seeks opportunities for growth and collaboration within NGS and the library community, as well as funding opportunities. (15%)
  5. Other duties as assigned. Supports interlibrary loan. Stays current with issues, trends, and best practices related to job duties by attending appropriate conferences, workshops, etc. and regularly consulting appropriate literature and other resources. (10%)

Minimum Education Required

MLS from an ALA accredited Library School.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

3-5 years library or comparable professional experience that provides an understanding of information retrieval, database design, and structure models as well as end-user needs.

Knowledge and Skills Required

Excellent oral and written communication skills and project management skills required. Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in research and reference, and searching structured / unstructured databases.

Experience in creating research guides, online learning materials, and training classes. Ability to lead people and to contribute to teams. Ability to balance multiple priorities. Familiarity with web technologies. Experience with Libguides and website management, Polaris ILS, library marketing/outreach, and analytics strongly preferred. Collection development or archival experience desirable. Adobe Creative Suite or other design skills a plus.
