National Cancer Institute Library Internship, NIH, Bethesda, MD

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking an intern for Fall 2019 or Spring 2020. The NCI is the federal government’s principal agency for cancer research and training. The NCI Library responds to reference questions, creates custom Nexis alerts, promotes NIH Library resources and services, and manages NCI Online Library, a new database of more than 26,000 oral histories, organizational charts, reports, press releases, and other items dating from 1937 to the present. It is a full-text database that launched in September 2019 and is powered by Inmagic Presto.

The intern will learn how NCI developed the database, including choosing the software, creating a taxonomy and controlled vocabulary, and designing the screens. S/he will select metadata and write short abstracts for new submissions; help write standard operating procedures for cataloging, editing, and abstracting; and participate in library promotion initiatives, such as exhibits, PowerPoint presentations, and writing articles for the monthly NCI newsletter. S/he will visit the NIH Library to learn about its state-of-the-art resources and services, and to participate in joint NCI/NIH Library initiatives.

The intern should have strong writing skills and an interest in historical materials, special libraries, and promoting library services.

The NCI Library is located on the Shady Grove campus. Shuttles run to the NIH campus in Bethesda and the Shady Grove Metro station.
