Reporting to the Resource Description Coordinator, the Metadata Services Librarian works within the Division’s Resource Description Group (RDG). The RDG is responsible for describing and providing access for library collections in all formats. The Metadata Services Librarian is primarily responsible for creating original metadata, complex metadata revision, and authority work for the library’s general and special collections. The Metadata Services Librarian will help shape the identity management work for the library’s collections and is expected to collaborate with colleagues from functional areas across GW Libraries and beyond, in service of the GW Community and the profession.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs original and complex metadata creation, editing, for all formats—print and non-print— that the library collects in multiple languages and time periods according to national and local standards.
- Works closely with professionals and paraprofessionals in an innovative, fast paced and production driven environment by taking full advantage of available metadata, helper applications, and emerging technology to augment, enhance and reuse the resource description and subject analyses for access to library collections.
- Assumes a leadership role in designing, implementing and conducting training, resource description, and data analysis for all library projects where metadata is the essential component, including but not exclusively, manuscripts, archival materials, and digital content acquired from the Special Collections Research Center and other sources.
- Participates in library planning, serves on library, university-wide and Washington Research Library Consortium committees.
- The George Washington University librarians are expected to be active in librarianship information science and contribute to developments in the field.
The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, D.C. The Metadata Services Librarian may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
- Master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited library program, or a Master’s degree in a related information field (by appointment date)
- Demonstrate experience with creating, editing, and transforming non-MARC metadata, such as EAD or others
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic organizational, descriptive, structural metadata standards and best practices, such as RDA, AACR, DACS, DCRM, MARC21, Dublin Core, MODS, etc., thesauri, controlled vocabulary, identity disambiguation
- Demonstrate the ability to be self-motivated and work creatively, independently and collaboratively
- Demonstrate excellent analytical, problem-solving skills, and computer/technological skills, including project management
- Demonstrate a strong service-orientation, forward thinking and flexible
- Demonstrate effective oral, written communication and interpersonal skills

- 1 year experience with creating metadata or cataloging in an academic library, museum, archive, a comparable research environment, or a metadata service provider
- 1 year supervisory experience
- Experience with using OCLC Connexion and an integrated library system, preferably Voyager
- Familiarity with metadata creation for manuscripts, archival, rare and special collections materials
- Experience with using open source tools and/or free software such as MarcEdit
- Working knowledge of at least one modern European language
