Library Technical Specialist/Digital Asset Curator, Carnegie Science

Location: Carnegie Science, 5241/5251 Broad Branch Road, N.W., Washington, DC 20015

The Library Technical Specialist/Digital Asset Curator performs tasks essential to the orderly operation of the joint library and archives of DTM and the Geophysical Laboratory and oversees digital asset management activities for the Broad Branch Road Campus.  The Library Technical Specialist/Digital Asset Curator supports the Librarian in providing information services to the campus community and assisting users in locating and using research resources.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interlibrary loan and document delivery, using OCLC WorldShare
  • Accessioning new acquisitions
  • Serials check-in and claiming
  • MARC copy cataloging, using OCLC Connexion and Inmagic DB/TextWorks
  • Circulation control and stack management
  • Boxing, foldering, and labeling archival records
  • Updating finding aids and collection management databases in Access, Excel, FileMakerPro
  • Collecting, organizing, uploading, and cataloging digital content in Carnegie’s digital asset management system
  • Creating metadata and controlled vocabularies according to established standards
  • Developing and implementing digital archive policies, procedures, and workflows in conjunction with DAM staff at Carnegie headquarters
  • Curating departmental publications repository
  • Digitizing photographs and documents
  • Training and supporting DAM contributors/users in both departments
  • Preparing library statistics reports
  • Maintaining library equipment in good working order and assisting personnel in using it
  • Ordering library and archival supplies
  • Performing basic library/archival preservation measures
  • Answering routine inquiries and referring users to the Librarian for in-depth assistance
  • Scheduling use of the Collaboration Center and setting up for meetings
  • Contributing to the preparation of library exhibits, websites, and social media posts
  • Assisting the Librarian with other relevant duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree; at least two years of relevant technical experience in a library, archives, or information center
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in library/information science, archival studies, electronic records management, digital curation, or related field

Specialized Skills


  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office, including Access; Google collaboration apps; EndNote or other reference management applications
  • Familiarity with MARC format, RDA, LSCH, and LC Classification
  • Familiarity with DACS and EAD archival standards
  • Familiarity with Dublin Core or other metadata schemas
  • Experience using thesauri/controlled vocabularies (e.g., LC Authorities, AAT)


  • Experience using OCLC WorldShare ILL; OCLC Connexion; FileMaker Pro; Inmagic DB/TextWorks and/or Inmagic Presto
  • Experience working with WIDEN or comparable digital asset management system
  • In-depth understanding of descriptive, technical, structural, and administrative metadata
  • Experience cataloging digital archival collections, including images, audio/video, documents, and other digital asset types

Background or interest in the sciences would be an asset.
