The Pratt Library is accepting applications for a Librarian II for the Collections Management Department.

Under the supervision of the Selection Unit Head, the Adult Selector chooses new materials for the EPFL system, which consists of a Central Library, 21 branches, and 2 bookmobiles.  Selection is one of four units in the Collection Management Department, which also includes Acquisitions, Technical Services, and Preservation.  The Central Library serves as the State Library Resource Center (SLRC) as well as the downtown branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library and the selection of library materials reflects and supports the mission of both.

Summary of Duties:

The summary of duties listed below is not exhaustive. Additional duties are dependent upon the needs of the hiring department/division.

Selects new adult materials in a timely manner for the branch libraries and Central Library departments, using both print and electronic selection tools.  Prepares replacement lists for assigned subject areas in fiction and nonfiction using the Collection Assessment and Replacement Schedule.  Monitors new titles by reviewing lists in publications such as Kirkus, NYT Book Review, Publisher’s Weekly and Library Journal.  Administers standing order plans from a variety of vendors.  Manages materials budget for areas of selection responsibilities.  Oversees the timely ordering and receipt of books for events and public programs.  Reviews donations for disposition.  Maintains open communication with branch managers and subject specialists.  Trains branch and departmental staff in collection management policies and procedures, including de-selection of materials.  Interacts with vendor and publisher sales and customer account representatives, in person, by phone, and online.  Works closely with other CMD staff to facilitate an effective workflow and resolve problems as they arise.  Participates in department and library planning and works in a collaborative style with other Selection Unit staff.  Stays current on trends, knowledge, and skills through involvement in continuing education opportunities and professional activities at the local and national level.  Performs other duties as assigned.


Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.  Two years experience in selecting materials for adults.  Experience in a public library and/or urban setting serving a diverse user population.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Collection Development experience or experience creating bibliographic lists and/or recommending titles for a library collection.  Working knowledge of print, non-print, and electronic library resources.  Knowledge of current publishing trends and collection management principles and issues.  Understanding of adult, young adult and children’s reading interests.  Library public service experience and/or experience assisting customers with Readers’ Advisory.  Familiarity with MARC records and integrated library systems (Sirsi Dynix preferred).  Familiarity with web-based bibliographic and acquisitions tools (Title Source III, iPage, Bibz).  Project management experience.  Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully, both verbally and in writing.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and others.  Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.  Genuine curiosity and a commitment to lifelong learning, with a broad range of interests and reading background.  Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages a plus.
