The LIS Alumni Board and other LIS/SLIS Alumni attended the LIS Annual Picnic at the CUA Law School Lawn/Café area on Saturday, August 23rd, to network with students, faculty, and staff during New Student Orientation.
A number of LIS/SLIS Alumni also attended a CUA Alumni Mixer at the Society of American Archivists (SAA) conference at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. on August 14, 2014.
J. Mark Sweeney (MSLS 1991) will be detailed, effective Aug. 25, 2014, to serve as Acting Associate Librarian for Library Services, Library of Congress, pending the conclusion of a national search.
Since April, 2012, Mr. Sweeney has served as the Library’s Director of Preservation. Prior to that he served for nearly five years as Chief of the Serial and Government Publications Division, followed by seven months as Chief of the Library’s Humanities and Social Sciences Division. In addition to his staff oversight and budget-management duties, he served as Program Manager for the Library’s highly successful National Digital Newspaper Program—a joint project with the National Endowment for the Humanities—most widely accessed by the public through the website Chronicling America. He has presented at numerous professional meetings and served on national and international boards and committees. He was also a key member of the Library’s Web Governance Board.
During his more than 27 years with the Library of Congress, Mr. Sweeney has also served as Chief of the Preservation Reformatting Division, as Head of the Newspaper Section, as a Reference Specialist and as a Supervisory Library Technician.
Mr. Sweeney holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from McGill University and a Master’s in Library and Information Science from the Catholic University of America.
