Archivist/Researcher – Salmon Group – Washington, DC

Salmon Group seeks an enthusiastic and highly organized archive professional to work in a small government agency with a downtown DC location.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Archives including accession, appraisal, description, and preservation of the organization’s print, audiovisual, oral history, and digital collections, including creating and maintaining finding aids.
  • Fulfill historic, legislative and legal research requests using information found in the physical archive and digital archive collection, as well as free and subscribed databases and other agency collections.
  • Write brief topical and country specific histories of the agency.
  • Maintain contacts with various departments to gather historically relevant materials for the collection.
  • Update and maintain the Archive’s legislative documents collection using an in-house database.
  • Maintain and add to a newly created digital archive hosted on the OCLC/ CONTENTdm system.
  • Work on special projects and presentations including exhibitions and celebrations.
  • Provide backup assistance to research library staff as needed.
  • Cross-train research library staff on archives procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an Archives or in an archives setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the U.S. Congress and the lawmaking process, including familiarity with the U.S. Code and the various types of documents used to determine the intent of Congress.  Experience conducting legislative history research with an emphasis on how laws change over time.
  • Communicate effectively and convey research in concise written form as well as orally.
  • Ability to prioritize and work under tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of copyright, FOIA laws, and NARA guidelines affecting federal records.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Microsoft Access), Dreamweaver, CONTENTdm (or other digital asset management systems), basic coding including HTML & CSS.
  • Familiarity with Dublin Core standards and MARC 21 metadata schema.
  • Able to work independently and set timelines to achieve medium and long term goals.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within the library and clientele.

Education:

Master’s degree in Library and Information science (MLS) with archives specialization or archives coursework required.  Certified Archivist (current or provisional certification) preferred.
